Today is First Friday Artwalk in Fairhope, AL. There’s a little shop around the corner that you might not think about visiting during Artwalk. Abigail’s Closet is a consignment shop and the owner, Elizabeth Ketchem was diagnosed recently with cholangiocarcinoma, the scientific name for bile duct cancer. You can read how I learned about this in yesterday’s post, She Starts Chemo Today.
Bile duct cancer is a rare type of cancer that forms in the small, tube-like bile ducts. A bile duct is a thin tube that transports bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine. Bile is made in the liver, stored in the gallbladder and aids in digesting food in the small intestine.
Her chemo treatment yesterday was 7 hours long. In an email where I asked how I could help, she responded,
“I want to make sure it [Abigail’s Closet] not just survives, but thrives in my absence.”
Elizabeth is married to “my David” as she refers to him in conversation and has two children. Abigail, 15, from whom the store gets its name, and David, Jr., who is 14. The family moved here from Birmingham in 2001. Elizabeth shared this about the shop-a-thon,
“Of course it will help our family financially, but the shop bears my 15-year-old daughter’s name, and I want it to continue to be a ministry that she can be proud of. She has such a heart for all people. She loves that our customers are able to find something there that makes them feel good about themselves at a price they can afford.”
I have adopted Abigail’s Closet for upcoming Fashion Friday posts and if you live anywhere within the zip code of Fairhope, AL, I want to invite you to shop in this lovely and friendly consignment shop.
