Fashion Friday: Jade, A New Gem in Town

A New Gem in Town

There’s a new gem in town and I can’t wait to share it with you. Notice it’s spelled g-e-m and not g-y-m. All of our resolutions may have us thinking about working out, but while this gem may actually be filled with iron, you don’t have to pump it! It makes you look great instantly, is a fabulous confidence booster and there’s no sweating involved. Well, almost no sweating…. Jade Boutique is the gem du jour on this Fashion Friday and it was filled with lust have fast fashion that this blogger could not go home without.

I spent most of the morning with Ashli Posey who is co-owner with Chanel Morgan. The shop is located on Main Street in Trussville, AL and if today’s crowd was any indication of their success, let’s just say it’s the main attraction in this little town that I once called home. You can also find them on Instagram as jadeboutiqueoftrussville.

How It All Started

Chanel and Ashli are tennis partners and were discussing their dreams after a match one day.

They were surprised they both had the same dream. A dream to open a boutique on Main Street in the small town of Trussville, AL. One month later their dreams began to take shape. JADE,  (also called the stone of heaven) was mined out of love for fashion and a passion to help women feel confident about themselves. The whole atmosphere at Jade is summed up in that sentence.

I Am No Model

Those of you who follow my blog, know that I am not part of the glitterati. Nobody chases me down the street to get my photo. I am NO model, but my little photo shoot with Ashli today was mega fun! She was very helpful and put all of my outfits together. Camera flashing, lights glaring and prompts for how to pose for my best “side”, had me feeling like part of the fashion tribe.

Stripes on the arms are a great way to wear them, when you feel they don’t work with your shape.  You’ll notice that most of these outfits are with my Frye Boots and skinny jeans.  As a writer, I have no need to dress up, so this is my new typical..

As a 50-ish woman who lives in South Alabama, my needs for winter are different than say someone from New York City. Our average temperatures are in the mid 50’s with hot flashes making it feel like mid 90’s, so 3/4 sleeves work year round.  As I write this however, our forecast for tomorrow is 19 degrees so the outfit below would be perfect.

I loved the vest below with its faux-leather lapels. Leather is on-trend this season.

Faux fur vests were a hit during 2013 and this one was so comfortable. I came home with the orange top to add to my growing crop of citrus colors.  Love it.

I loved this top with fringe and batwing sleeves. Funness!!!

This top, trimmed with sequins on the cuffs and neckline makes a great option for New Years Eve or any fun party on your calendar.

And last, but not least…

I love this Aztec Cardigan, but have to apologize for the picture. It is one of my favs.

Styles for Every Woman

Their shop has styles for every woman. They have sizes ranging from a tiny 2 to a 3X. They sell jeans, leggings, jewelry, and shoes…just about everything you’d need in one shop.

My workout today was intense. There was some glistening on the skin. But, I’ll take this gem over that gym any day of the week. The more iron found in the gem, Jade, the greener it is in color!  But, don’t let that scare you off… you won’t spend much green in Jade. They have excellent prices to match their incredible service.

Fashion Friday: Stocking Stuffers

I’ve had a few conversations lately with women who wish there was a better coverage foundation out there. I would have to agree that some are too thick, too oily or just don’t cover well enough.  Others seem to go on perfectly, but in an hour they have disappeared. If you have a favorite, please share it with us.

In the meantime, here are a few things that it would be super terrific to find in my stocking on Christmas morning.

Bobbi Brown Corrector

I’ve searched the web and the best prices offered for this fabulous dark circle corrector is at Nordstrom for $21.60.

My favorite color so far is Granite Ink and once again Nordstrom had the best price at $20.70. I’d love to try the Espresso.

Maybelline Red Revival

This is my very favorite red lipstick. It’s only $7.79 at drugstore.com.

Clinique Instant Lift for Brows

I discovered this new love when I purchased another product and this was a free gift. I love that it is two products in one and truly gives my eyes a lift. The best price I found was at Nordstrom for $14.85 with free shipping.

Merle Norman Eye Shadow Base

I can’t remember what I paid for mine and they don’t post prices on their site.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

I started using this mascara when I was 14 and have tried many through the years. Nothing compares. My last purchase was $4.49 at Target.

Aveda Brilliant Anti-Humectant

If I was told I could only have one “designer” hair product, it would be this one – hands down. Living in the south, humidity is not my friend and this product helps keep the frizzies under control. This sells at most Aveda Salons for $21.00.

Tweezerman

Best Tweezers I’ve ever owned. I now own two pair for my two cities and one for my travel bag, because they are the BEST! You can find them on Amazon for $22. I know that is a bit pricey for tweezers, but they are worth it!!!

These are just a few of my favorite “beauty” things that I use in hopes of improving my fashion and style. What are yours? And, as mentioned earlier, if you know of a foundation that covers well and lasts all day, please share with Santa and tell him I’ve been a very good girl this year.

Fashion Friday – Heels with Jingtinglers

I have a new friend. We met in blog world first and in the real one yesterday. It was at this meeting that Fashion Friday for today was born. You see she is a beautiful lady, funny, loved by many in the fair city of Fairhope and has an incredible sense of humor. I liked her blog the first time I read it and when I met her in person, I liked her immediately.

We talked about our families, our blogs, our hopes and our dreams. And had I not looked up from my cup of tea for a second I would have missed the fashion icon that strolled through Latta Da` Coffee Shop a few minutes into our talk.

I was astonished when he entered and just sat there with my mouth open for a second, but not Hope.  Oh no, she was up with camera in hand immediately and started snapping shots. I closed my mouth and blinked my star-struck eyes and jerked into gear to get my own photos.

He has used colors in ways – you don’t know the reason.

He was an imposter in the early stages of his fashion season…

By copying the pattern of a hat and a coat, but don’t let me distract you or misquote…

He’s been known for wearing his shoes 2 sizes to tight,

And his trim of choice will mostly likely be white.

He is a loner – lives with his dog and hates all noise.

People aren’t his thing, so none he employs.

His diet of choice – likely vegetarian, as he hates roast beast.

But neither is he a baker, no not in the least.

Stockings? – He is NOT a fan.

Neither does he support a stock purchase plan.

For 53 years, he worked on his dream and used black thread

To adorn one little head.

He hates all dancers who wear jingtinglers tied on their heels.

But he’s been responsible for delivering meals on wheels.

You see, he used to hate those he now loves,

Some of the Who’s down in Whoville who whisper like doves.

And now he is listening, no longer puzzling and puzzling,

Christmas is coming and there’s no more bumfuzzling.

Red and green are his colors of choice,

Without hesitation, we now all rejoice.

For we now know the reason for his fashion treason.

His heart which was once two sizes too small,

Is now just the right size for Merry Christmas to all.

Shoes that are two sizes too small.
Shoes that are two sizes too small.

And to my new friend, Hope from The Fairhope Supply Co.., what a fun day!!!

Fashion Friday at The Pink Tulip

Today’s feature is straight from our neighborhood specialty shop, The Pink Tulip, in Homewood, AL. I have loved this store since it opened in 1986. My sweet helper this week, was Melanie who put outfits together, took my pictures and found just the right long necklaces to elongate my short body. These outfits make me want to change out of my pj’s.

A solid color with striped leggings make me look a little taller.

The necklace Melanie chose for this outfit had a mix of metals and pearls. It could be dressy or casual.

The leggings and tunic paired with an infinity scarf and necklace elongate my torso.

This tunic’s print looked like a cabled sweater, but it was oh so cool on the skin. Once again, according to Melanie, it is good to wear a scarf with a long and short necklace. They have a great selection of both for Christmas gifts.

Ruffled Sleeve Orange Tunic with Skinny Jeans and Boots

I felt 10 years younger in this little outfit. The ruffled sleeves are precious. I bought several items, but not this top.  I may have to go back and get it!

I love the little birdcage necklace.

Chevron Stripes

I’ve always been told that since I’m short and a little heavier than I used to be, that I can’t do stripes. Melanie said, “Oh yes you can, in a Chevron. The upward motion of the stripe helps to make you look thinner.” Well, I had to try it. What do you think? For a pop of color, she added the turquoise flower pendant. Isn’t it so cute?

I am no model, unless it’s for big girl clothing. What I love about The Pink Tulip is their ability to make a 50+ year old, overweight, lady look and feel fabulous and fashionable. I hope this long over lean style never goes out!

They have a great selection of long necklaces, scarves, leggings and long tops to cover the areas that need covering. I did quite a bit of Christmas shopping in here this week. There is something for every age group.

If you stop by, ask for Melanie, she was so sweet and very helpful. And isn’t she pretty? Thank you, Melanie!

Although, I have to add that as long as I’ve been shopping at Pink Tulip, everybody there is always helpful. They also ship, so take a peek at their photo album. You’re sure to find something you can’t live without.

Fashion Friday – Aztec Cardigans

Baby, it’s cold outside and time to wrap up in our coziest sweaters and jackets.  I’ve found a new style cardigan that I’m in L-O-V-E with for this season. Everybody needs an Aztec Cardigan!  They are brand new and sure to become legendary.

My sister, daughter and I went shopping recently in search of the perfect one for each of us, and for this Friday’s post, I will feature the one my sister found at Lotus Boutique at the Galleria Mall in Birmingham, AL.

She is so very cute with her skinny jeans and boots.  We both thought about what Twiggy (my fashion consultant) would say, and agreed that her boots with a heel would look EVEN better. But, we are not foot-prepared yet and cannot shop in heels. I’m sure the more we wear them, the better conditioned we’ll get and soon we’ll be trimming shrubbery in our heels. But for now…

The length of this cardigan is what caught our eye and she immediately fell in love with it.  I only hope she gets to wear it.  She has teenage daughter.

If you’ve found your perfect cardigan for this season, or are searching for one for someone for Christmas, share with us where you find it.  We are still in search of one more.

Fashion Friday – My New Skinny on Jeans

In the post, Traveling Jeans a few weeks ago, I came down hard on how skinny jeans are not for everyone.  I especially remember something about how they were NOT for me because I’m short, over 50 and overweight. Well, my friend “Twiggy,” aka Linda, has set me straight. You were introduced to Linda and her two girls, here, and she has truly opened my skinny eyes.  (So glad to have something I can call skinny about me!)

My friend, Linda, with her two daughters.
My friend, Linda, with her two daughters.

When our kids were little, we loved shopping together for ourselves as well as our children.  In those days, Twiggy introduced me to Jack and Jill in Homewood, AL, Lands End catalog for our boy(s), smocking for my baby girl once she came along, and both of our husband’s  hated to hear we’d been to Parisian’s together any day of the week.  I have always been one to lean more toward the older, classic look for myself and Twiggy has had her work cut out for her, keeping me even a little bit trendy.

She has recently nicknamed me “Riley,” because of a post I wrote about the The Life of Riley and how I basically live it in her skinny eyes. So, she said to me before I left for England, “Riley, you have got to get rid of those bell bottoms!” Just like old times, we went shopping together and looking through her eyes, I began to see that if I focus on my best (after having her point them out to me) features, I too, can wear skinny jeans.  Wow!  Big step.

Speaking of big steps, Twiggy also advised me that I have to “get up off the floor.” I bought my first pair of wedge heeled boots, tucked my brand new skinny jeans into them, and may I just say… I am walking a bit taller. I have been amazed at the compliments I’ve had from total strangers. As we all like to say, getting old is the pits, but with friends like Twiggy, no one need ever really know my age. That will be the goal of “Fashion Friday’s” from now on, to help us come up with ideas to look great no matter our shape, and look as young as possible without giving people something to talk about.

On this Fashion Friday, I’m encouraging all my over-50 friends, to trust Twiggy to point out your best features, help you get up off the floor, and trade out all of your “Not-Your-Daughter’s-Jeans,” for your daughter’s jeans.  If I am any example, I can promise you one thing, you will feel better about how you look.  And, she will likely come up with just the cutest nickname for you.

Leave your questions for Twiggy and I’ll be sure she answers you.  Have a great weekend.
